Title
Hosting, Attending, and Wishing Birthdays
Question
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

I wanted to know about the permissibility of birthdays. Is a person allowed to host or attend a birthday party with close friends and family? Is a person allowed to wish someone a happy birthday or reply to happy birthday messages/call?

Answer
الجواب حامدا ومصليا

It is permissible to celebrate one’s birthday, as well as to host or attend a birthday gathering, provided that the occasion is free of religious significance, the intention to imitate non-Muslims, and impermissible elements such as dancing, free-mixing, blowing out candles to make wishes, or creating an expectation that others must offer greetings or gifts and taking offense if they do not.

Likewise, saying “happy birthday” to someone or responding to such greetings is permissible. Nonetheless, it is preferable that the one offering the greeting use the occasion to make duʿā for the individual rather than limiting the exchange to a customary phrase. As for the person whose birthday it is, the day should not be reduced to mere celebration; rather, it should prompt introspection, repentance for past shortcomings, and renewed commitment to spiritual improvement, serving as a reminder of life’s brevity and the need to prepare for the hereafter.
