Title
Wudu Over Weather Resistant Socks
Question
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

I work in a warehouse where we typically have to walk all day and wear some heavy boots, but Alḥamdulillāh I get a bit of time for prayer, enough to fulfill my farḍ. I have some thick waterproof socks and they are very very uncomfortable especially in this setting where I’m up and walking around for 10 hours a day, so it can be easier for me to make wuḍūʾ. I have 3 prayers at work, so I have to make wuḍūʾ about 3 different times. I was going to ask if these certain weather resistant socks are okay for me to wipe on so I can make wuḍūʾ and still be comfortable at work. Waterproof super thick socks are extremely uncomfortable. Here is their link [removed].

Answer
الجواب حامدا ومصليا

In principle, it will be permissible to wipe over any thick sock that meets the following requirements:

  1. Water resistance: The sock must prevent water from reaching the skin at the time of wiping on the sock
  2. Durability: The sock must be able to endure walking for 3.4 statute miles without tearing.
  3. Nontransparency: The skin must not be visible when wearing the sock
  4. Structure: The sock should stay upright on the foot without needing to be fastened or tied.
  5. Coverage: Must cover the entire ankle.

Therefore, if weather resistant socks or any other socks meet all these requirements, it will be permissible to wipe over them. However, if it fails to meet any one of these requirements, it will not be permissible to wipe over them.[1]

Although we have tested another brand of weather resistant socks and found them to meet the above conditions, the same may not necessarily hold true for all brands. Hence, one may use the above criteria to determine the eligibility of the specific brand and model purchased.

And Allah knows best.
