Title
Earning Money via Social Media for Quran Recitation
Question
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Is earning money from views on social media (YouTube, TikTok) halal if my content is Quran recitations? I heard that earning money from reciting Quran is haram, However, I am not asking people for money to hear me recite. I’m uploading my recitations for anyone to listen to and these social media platforms are paying me for accumulating views on their platform There are also times where I livestream myself reciting Quran and people send me money directly through the livestream as a way to show appreciation even though I do not ask for it.
Answer
الجواب حامدا ومصليا

It is impermissible to accept wages or fees in exchange for reciting the Quran.[1] Therefore, one is neither allowed to request nor accept any payment in lieu of their recitation.

The money that is earned through the views on social media is not in exchange for the recitation of the Quran or the channel’s content itself. Rather, it is earned as payment for accumulating views. Hence, it will be fine for one to collect payment from these social media platforms because the payment is given based on the views the channel attracts and not the content. However, one’s intention for posting Quran recitation should be for people’s benefit, not for a revenue stream.

It is also fine to accept the money given through the livestreams. This money is a gift from the viewers to the content creator as a show of appreciation and gratitude for whatever services or enjoyment they may have received. No one is obligated or expected to donate. The money given is out of their own volition as a gift rather than as a transaction for the recitation. Again, the intention of the one is reciting is important, and they may gauge it by asking themselves whether they would post the content and conduct the livestream events even if there was no revenue or donations.

And Allah knows best.
