I would like to inquire about the permissibility of using a product called Fibro-Gide, which is used by dental practitioners to repair gum recession. The following is a signed letter from the manufacturer of Fibro-Gide, Geistlich Pharma, and a link to the product: "Geistlich products – Are they “halal”? The following information applies to products from Geistlich Pharma and may be considered of relevance for this question: i. Geistlich products are considered as medical devices, not a food. ii. Geistlich products consist of the purified bone mineral derived from bovine bone, originating from cattle with veterinary certified fitness for human consumption and / or of the purified collagen derived from porcine tissue, originating from pigs with veterinary certified fitness for human consumption. iii. The manufacturing process of Geistlich products includes several steps which render the animal tissue non-viable. Please be aware, that at the current time point Geistlich Pharma cannot issue a “halal” certificate for the products. In case of uncertainty regarding this matter, Geistlich Pharma recommends that patients contact their local religious community." www.geistlich-na.com/dental-professionals/products/matrices/fibro-gide Given this information, are Muslim patients allowed to use this product when undergoing treatment, or should it be avoided?
Geistlich Fibro-Gide is a porcine, porous, resorbable, and volume-stable collagen matrix specifically designed for soft-tissue regeneration.[1] Collagen derived from porcine tissue is a protein that comes from the skin and bones of pigs. It is impermissible to derive any benefit from swine and its derivatives.[2] Hence, it is impermissible to use Fibro-Gide.
However, if an expert Muslim doctor informs one that there is a medical necessity to use this product and there is no viable alternative, it will be permissible to use this product.

وإنما لم يجز الانتفاع بعظم الخنزير والآدمي، أما الخنزير فلأنه نجس العين بجميع أجزائه والانتفاع بالنجس حرام

فقد جوز التداوي بعظم ما سوى الخنزير والآدمي من الحيوانات ... كذا في الذخيرة ... وإذا كان برجل جراحة يكره المعالجة بعظم الخنزير والانسان لأنه يحرم الانتفاع به كذا في الكبرى

[لنجاسة عينه] أي عين الخنزير: أي بجميع أجزائه، وأورد في الفتح

ومن الذكية يجوز كيفما كان إلا عظم الخنزير والآدمي لنجاسته...وقال في النهاية: يجوز التداوي بالمحرم كالخمر والبول إذا أخبره طبيب مسلم أن فيه شفاء ولم يجد غيره من المباح ما يقوم مقامه والحرمة ترتفع للضرورة فلم يكن متداويا بالحرام

ولا يجوز بيع شعر الخنزير لأنه محرم فيبطل لنجاسته ولكن يباح الانتفاع به، أي بشعر الخنزير للخرز ونحوه ضرورة

لا يجوز بيع شعر الخنزير لنجاسته، ولكن يباح الانتفاع به للخرز للضرورة
