Title
Smokeless Tobacco Products
Question
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

I was wondering what the ruling was on smokeless tobacco/nicotine products such as Zyns?

Answer
الجواب حامدا ومصليا

As a general rule, intentionally consuming something one knows will negatively impact their health is makrūh (disliked); the level of karāha (dislike) varies depending on the impact to one’s health.[1]

Zyn is a brand of nicotine pouches that has gained popularity within recent years. The pouches themselves do not produce smoke or vapor, are odor-less, and do not contain any tobacco. Although products like these are still relatively new and require further study, many mention that Zyn pouches do not include chemicals that are inherently harmful to one’s health.[2]

Although, Zyn pouches are not known to contain chemicals inherently harmful to the body, one should still abstain from their use as they contain nicotine, a highly addictive drug. Becoming dependent on such a drug has the potential to heavily impact one’s health. Thus, it is advisable for the general person to abstain from the use of Zyn pouches and similar products. If an individual is trying to quit smoking and requires Zyn or similar products to help wean themselves off their addiction, it will be permissible for them to do so without any karāha.[3]
